A Statement of Welcome

A Statement of Welcome

In the Heart of the City, the Hospitality Healing and Hope of Jesus

Welcome to First Presbyterian Church. Our simple mission statement is: “In the Heart of the City: The Hospitality, Healing, and Hope of Jesus.”

Ever since 1887 we have been a downtown church with a long history of being an open-door, open-hearted gathering place for all manner of community groups, programs, and events at the heart of our Pueblo community. We are a welcoming congregation to all who are seeking a spiritual home, offering a variety of worship and small group opportunities. Worship and music are at the center of our congregation’s life and ministry of hope-giving, faith-shaping sermons and songs of inspiration and encouragement.

Let us extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, widowed, straight, gay, confused, the rich, the poor, and the homeless. We especially welcome wailing babies and excited toddlers. We welcome those who can sing like Pavarotti and those can’t carry a tune in a bucket.

Certainly you’re welcome here, even if you’re just browsing, just woken up, or just got out of prison. We don’t care if you’re more Christian than the Pope or haven’t been to church since little Joey’s baptism 10 years ago. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet and to teenagers who are growing up too fast.

Of course we welcome single moms, football dads, starving artists, tree huggers, latte sippers, vegans, and carnivores. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome you if you’re having problems, are down in the dumps or don’t like organized religion—we’re not too keen on it either. We offer welcome to those who think the Earth is flat, work too hard, don’t work, can’t spell, or graduated at the top of their class. We welcome those who are inked, pierced, both, or neither.

May we offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down their throats as kids or got lost on their way to renew their license plates and wound up here by mistake.

Everyone one is welcome at First Presbyterian: Pilgrims, tourists, saints, seekers, doubters and most of all—we welcome you.
